DescriptionAGRICULTURE - A Cornerstone of Washington's EconomyThe Washington State Department of Agriculture (WSDA) has a critical mission of supporting one of the state's most important industries, agriculture, while at the same time promoting consumer and environmental protection. The mission of the Natural Resource Assessment Section (NRAS) is to assess the effect of pesticides, nutrients and agriculture practices on natural resources and the environment and to work with agriculture to protect the states natural resources through management practices and education.The activities of the WSDA Natural Resources Assessment Section (NRAS) focus on the impacts of agriculture chemicals on Washington state's natural resources. The goal of WSDA is to work together with the agricultural community and regulators to protect Washington's natural wealth and the environment. WSDA is developing analytical tools that will be used to identify, evaluate and mitigate impacts to Washington's renewable and non-renewable resources.What we are looking for:We are always searching for the brightest and best to join our team and are committed to fostering employee growth and development. This mapping is done using GIS methods and photogrammetry.   • The position monitors and maps locations in Eastern WA where agricultural commodities are grown or where livestock operations exist. This activity is done with oversight of senior staff and the regional unit supervisor. This mapping is done using GIS methods and photogrammetry for the purposes of determining crop type, field area, crop rotation schedule, irrigation methods and other relevant information necessary to support the environmental and human health objectives of the Natural Resources Assessment Section.
  • This position will assist regional staff in the collection and analysis of water quality data for WSDA's ambient monitoring program and special water monitoring project as needed.
  • This position assists the Section's pesticide use specialist with pesticide usage data collection efforts. These activities are vital to the NRAS's ability to conduct pesticide risk analysis for endangered species and to assist in the investigation of pesticide occurrences in private and public drinking water supply wells per the Statewide Pesticide Management Strategy.QualificationsRequired:
    • Possess a Bachelor's degree involving major study in an agricultural related field, environmental, physical, natural sciences, environmental planning or other related field and two years of professional level experience in environmental analysis or control or environmental planning
    • Possess plant identification skills and knowledge of crops grown in Eastern Washington gained from education and/or experience
    • Possess a working knowledge of GIS technologies including mobile applications
    • Experience collecting data on one or more of the following parameters: terrestrial or aquatic vegetation, water chemistry, physical stream attributes (flow rate), and collecting environmental samples for laboratory analysis
    • Experience with pesticides, pesticide usage and related agricultural production practicesPreferred Qualifications:
    • Ability to communicate with a high level of professionalism with agency staff and customers both inside and outside the agency.
    • A self-motivated individual who is able to work in a team setting to meet data project deadlines, be detail-oriented and meticulous in data quality control and assurance
    • Demonstrate reliability, effective time management skills, and the ability to meet deadlinesSpecial Requirement/Conditions of Employment
    • Ability to safely drive an agency vehicle to conduct windshield surveys to collect crop system data.
    • Ability to safely conduct water monitoring activities which requires working outdoors on uneven terrain as well as in and around deep, and or fast moving water.
