Job Description:

  • Develop plans and experiments to asses trace metals analytical methods and trace metals levels in complex matrices.
  • Identify, develop, and execute continuous improvement strategies for trace metals analysis methods including identifying and executing replacement strategies for end-of-life or outdated analytical equipment qualifying new equipment and demonstrating performance improvements, assessing accuracy, repeatability, linearity of response, identifying bias offsets as needed.
  • Support metals leads and analysts with technical expertise for troubleshooting, SPC investigations, 8D investigations, and escalations as needed.
  • Mentor analysts to develop technical understanding of trace metals methods and support interpretation of data as needed.
  • Communicate technical information verbally and in writing that is clear, concise, and appropriate for the target audience.
  • Perform hands-on laboratory experiments and/or coordinate with metals area lead(s) to work with metals analysts to accomplish project goals for the implementation of new or enhanced methods using well-established good lab practices.
  • Prepare a weekly summary of specific activities, projects and priorities including needs and risks for achievement of objectives to established standards and timelines.
  • Draft, review, and submit new or revised metrology standard operating procedures, equipment maintenance procedures, response flow checklists, OCAPS, or other documents applying MLI's document control procedures as assigned.
  • Support execution of assigned tasks to the standards and guidelines established by Lab Manager demonstrating ownership and initiative. Routine assigned tasks may include but are not limited to:
    • Prioritize safety at all times
    • Handle solid, liquid and gaseous chemicals including weighing, pouring, measuring volume, mixing, and diluting
    • Perform analyses for characterization trace metals levels using well known best laboratory and good chemical hygiene practices
    • Prepare samples minimizing sources of particulate and chemical contamination in laboratory and clean room environments
    • Maintain working areas in a clean, organized manner, applying good chemical hygiene practices (e.g., cleaning counter tops, equipment, work areas, floors, lab areas garments, etc.)
    • Prepare a weekly written summary report describing key activities accomplished, projects in progress with milestones and estimated completion dates, observations and opportunities for continuous improvement, requests for help needed, risks for completion of projects/tasks on schedule, and other relevant information
    • Perform preventative and corrective maintenance tasks on systems or equipment, as needed
    • Support troubleshooting using Response-Flow-Checklists (RFCs) and Out of Control Action Plans (OCAPS) and support the development or documentation of RFCs and OCAPs, as assigned.
    • Follow departmental communication guidelines including reviewing e-mail at the beginning and end of each shift; responding to e-mail in clear, concise, business-appropriate English to acknowledge receipt and to provide response or schedule for response for actions requested; and proactive communication to managers, project stakeholders, or others when assistance, direction or clarification is needed.
    • Generate project plans and proposals with clear success criteria, well defined milestones, robust schedules, risk assessments with mitigation strategies, and resource needs well defined.
    • Execute analysis generating data that is timely, consistent, meaningful, and accurate.
    • Prepare summaries and reports with objective data to support conclusions, concise descriptions of accomplishments compared to success criteria, and proposals for follow-up activity with justification.
    • Understand and apply complex or advanced chemical and statistical concepts in a laboratory setting. Examples include: chemical calculations including calculation of concentration in various units; dilutions; analysis of pure and impure mixtures to assess multiple trace metals concentrations; assessing and applying appropriate calibration and blank corrections; comparison of data to hypothetical values; statistical validation of measurements using statistical process control (SPC) and measurement system analysis (MSA) methodologies; line and curve fitting; charting and graphing of data; etc.
    • Complete literature research to determine known or analogous analytical methods for target molecules and develop safe and plausible strategies for improvement of trace metals analytical measurements.
    • Demonstrate a drive to achieve results through ownership, integrity, collaboration, persistence, and teamwork.
    • Exhibit and apply technical expertise including a thorough understanding of chemical principles, laboratory techniques, and characterization/metrology techniques.
    • Maintain a laboratory notebook with detailed observations and records required to reproduce work or support MLI intellectual property goals, such as securing patents.
    • Collect and consolidate information and data from multiple sources including laboratory notebooks records, metrology reports, internal and external databases, and chemical literature to enable evaluation of experimental outcomes by identifying important information, tracing possible causes of problems, and searching for practical solutions.
    • Analyze data appropriately including generating graphical representations, applying mathematical concepts, modeling, and relevant statistical analysis using software tools such as MSExcel, JMP, Origin, ChemDraw or other data analysis software.
    • Generate concise written summaries expressing facts, ideas, and opinions clearly in properly structured, well-organized, and grammatically correct reports and documents utilizing language and terminology that is understandable and relevant for the target audience and contains conclusions supported by data.
    • Demonstrate conceptual thinking understanding a given situation or problem by combining information, identifying patterns or connections and identifying key or underlying issues in data sets or experiments.
    • Assemble, use and maintain common laboratory equipment including but not limited to glassware, syringes, Schlenk lines, recirculating chillers/heaters, pressure vessels, and igh precision balances.
    • Perform hands-on laboratory experiments to accomplish project goals for the of new products and applications using well-established good lab practices.

      • Computer literacy including ability to use software to prepare and revise reports and documents, analyze and present data, and model chemical concepts. Experience with MS Outlook, MS Excel, MS Word, ChemDraw, JMP, PowerPoint and Visio is desired but not required.
      • Understand and apply chemical concepts, executing defined and documented methods in the laboratory with minimal oversight.
      • Demonstrate sufficient math and chemistry skills to enable calculation of dilutions, molarity, averages, standard deviations, statistics, dilutions, and other relevant mathematical manipulations to support job tasks independently.
      • Demonstrate familiarity with state of the art trace metals analysis at low levels in complex mixtures for multiple analyzed metals.
      • Prepare a weekly summary of specific activities, projects and priorities including needs and risks for achievement of objectives to established standards and timelines.
      • Demonstrate ability to work well and effectively with a wide range of individuals with different personalities, education levels, and expertise.
      • Ability to collaborate with a diverse group including process owners, process engineers, laboratory operators, and stakeholders with varying degrees of technical expertise.
      • Flexibility with schedule to support 24/7 troubleshooting when required.
      • Ability to identify correlations and causal factors in data streams from multiple sources.
      • Minimum requirement associate of science with 5 years laboratory experience (or equivalent experience) in chemistry, chemical engineering or a related discipline such as biology or physics. Masters of science and minimum 3 years laboratory experience preferred.
      • Able to follow written and verbal instructions in English.
      • Prepare clear and concise written and oral summaries of planned and completed work in well structured, grammatically correct English.-- Working Conditions: Duties are generally performed indoors often in a clean room environment on a chemical facility with a 24-hour per day, seven day per week manufacturing environment. Handling and working with hazardous materials and analytical equipment is routine. The employee may work in the presence of hazardous chemicals and electrical equipment. When working in the presence of these hazards, the employee is expected to follow company safety rules and use proper personal protection such as: hardhat, respirator, hearing protection, protective clothing, safety glasses, safety footwear, respirators, gloves, aprons, and other PPE etc as defined. MLI is an alcohol and drug free work place. Physical Demands: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, stand, walk, talk and listen. The employee is frequently required to handle and use objects, tools, controls, or keyboards; reach with hands and arms; kneel, crouch and occasionally climb. The employee works around analytical and supporting equipment that requires observation and awareness of surroundings and attention to detail. Personal protective equipment may be required including lab coats, aprons, face shields, safety glasses, goggles, safety footwear, partial and or full-face respirators, or other PPE as required. Employees are expected to report to work well-rested and able to focus fully on the job at hand to ensure their own safety and the safety of their colleagues. The employee is regularly required to see and read print, gauges and instrumentation. Specific vision abilities required are; close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Qualifications Education Required Associates or better in Chemistry or related field.
