Senior UI/UX Designer Are you energized by working with teams to solve difficult challenges and rapidly deliver human centered solutions? If so, we're looking for someone like you to join our team at APL! Who We Are APL's Design Thinking Group (DTG) is a multi-disciplinary team of engineers, designers, and makers applying Human Centered Design (HCD) and Design Thinking (DT) methodologies toward tackling gnarly national security challenges. We immerse ourselves within the use-case environment, and collaborate with government and industry partners to develop impactful product concepts and user experiences. Who We're Searching For DTG's Concept Development Section is assembling an Avengers-style team to evolve early-stage ideas into tangible prototypes and immersive user-experiences. We are seeking motivated UI/UX Designers with portfolios demonstrating meticulous attention to detail, jaw-dropping visual story-telling, and a firm grasp of materials and processes. You will become a core part of APL's DTG and work with talented teammates to define all aspects of end-to-end digital experiences. As a Senior on the team, you will advocate for design methodologies, helping others in the organization develop their acuity and experience. As a Senior UI/UX Designer you will... Deliver rapid visualization of design intention through concept sketches, prototypes, and renderings using a variety of design tools. Provide effective verbal and visual communication of conceptual ideas, detailed designs, and design rationale to teams and project sponsors. Lead the execution of meaningful generative and evaluative user testing to guide design decisions. Collaborate with developers and engineering teams to craft Graphic User Interface (GUI) prototypes in support of concept development. Generate interactive and low-fidelity GUI prototypes to support visioning of future scenarios. Lead and coordinate external development partners' efforts to ensure timely product delivery that aligns with project goals. Put into action Design Thinking tools to plan and facilitate cross-disciplinary creative workshops. Lead and/or support creative workshops sought at generating and prioritizing novel solutions to mission challenges. Collaborate with research teams to conduct immersive contextual inquiry intended to identify stakeholder-needs and understand use-case environments. You meet our minimum requirements if you have... A BA/BFA/BS in a related field, such as User Interface Design, User Experience Design, Interaction Design, or Industrial Design 5+ years of experience in a human-centered UI/UX Design role. Demonstrated experience applying Design Thinking methodologies to translate stakeholder-needs and requirements into creative, yet tangible digital experiences. Experience leading teams and/or partners execute design and prototyping of early-stage ideas. Experience leading design and development partners execute tasking around project specifications. Demonstrated experience planning and conducting both quantitative and qualitative user research or usability studies at all stages of product development. A basic understanding of production methods and processes utilized in the prototyping of digital product solutions. Experience with Adobe Creative Suite including: Xd, Photoshop, InDesign, and Illustrator; Microsoft Office programs; GUI Prototyping applications such as Sketch, Balsamiq, and Axure. A strong portfolio that showcases a sharp eye for detail, robust design process, and visual aesthetics. The ability to obtain Secret level security clearance. If selected, you will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship. Are willing and able to travel 20%. You'll go above and beyond if you demonstrate... Outstanding sketching and visual storytelling capabilities Strong command of verbal expression when sharing thoughts and ideas Experience with building physical mockups and low-fidelity coding Ability to flex into graphic or industrial design roles to support project work as needed Experience with ethnographic research and insight translation method Experience working within a consulting environment. Experience with prototyping and/or concept visualization within a virtual immersion environment (AR/VR/XR) Experience maturing a product concept through to launch / commercialization Experience in federal government or federal government consulting Active security clearance (Secret or above) Project management certification, training, or demonstrated equivalent experience Professional training or certification in design software applications Why Work at APL?
