Job Description:
Job Summary
Central Washington University (CWU) announces an extraordinary
opportunity to lead Undergraduate Studies at an innovative,
financially stable university that provides the supportive and
hands-on education students from all walks of life need to be
successful. The main campus in Ellensburg is located in the
beautiful foothills of the Cascade Mountains, providing ample
opportunities for outdoor recreation and is approximately 100 miles
east of the Seattle-Tacoma-Bellevue metropolitan area. Ellensburg
features a vibrant downtown area with shops and restaurants. With
an estimated population of nearly 4,000,000, Seattle Metro is the
15th largest metropolitan area in the United States. A substantial
percentage of alumni live in the Puget Sound area providing
valuable opportunities for student and professional development.
CWU also has eight instructional centers around the state, in
addition to a growing selection of fully online programs. CWU
invites expressions of interest, nominations, and applications for
the inaugural position of Dean of Undergraduate Studies.
CWU acknowledges that the Dean's work will take place on Yakama
land, and that the Ellensburg campus is on lands ceded by the
Pshwanapum and other bands and tribes of the Yakama Nation in the
Treaty of 1855. The Yakama people remain committed stewards of this
land, cherishing it and protecting it, as instructed by elders
through generations, and since time immemorial. CWU is honored and
grateful that the campus is located here today on their traditional
lands, and offers thanks to the legacy of the original people,
their lives, and their descendants.
The Dean is the leader of Undergraduate Studies, with opportunities
to promote high quality academic programs and student achievement
among a diverse student body. With CWU's continued commitment to
equity, diversity, inclusivity, and belongingness, the Dean will
collaborate with the units of Undergraduate Studies and across an
engaged campus community to promote inclusion, transparency and
partnership among programs, departments, and units. The Dean will
be an innovative, emotionally intelligent leader who can inspire
Undergraduate Studies to meet its mission of promoting a
supportive, equitable, collaborative, and engaged learning
environment. Under the leadership of its new president, Dr. A.
James Wohlpart, CWU is currently engaged in strategic planning for
the institution. The Dean will be integral to its implementation by
providing vision and leadership for Undergraduate Studies.
CWU is one of three State-supported comprehensive universities in
Washington State. CWU began as a normal school, became a College of
Education in 1937, a state college in 1961, and a comprehensive
university in 1977. Offering more than 135 bachelor's and master's
degrees, the University enrolls approximately 12,000 students and
employs about 1,800 faculty and staff. With its robust focus on
inclusivity and diversity, more than a third of students are people
of color. CWU enrolls and graduates the largest percentage of
Hispanic/Latinx students of any public baccalaureate institution in
the State. Additionally, the university enrolls a substantial
number of international students. Undergraduate Studies encompasses
the areas of General Education, Accreditation, Interdisciplinary
Studies, Office of University Student Research, and Academic
Advising.
The university continues to invest substantially in fundraising and
development. The Dean will be engaged in fundraising and external
development as the university takes steps toward launching a
capital campaign. For more information about CWU, please visit
