$29.11/Regular/Full-TimeResponsible for developing and coordinating
identification, evaluation, preservation, and conservation of
cultural resources as related to archaeological and historic
properties important to the Yakama Nation in the Administrative
Forest as established in the Lands and Natural Resources Policy
Plan. Incumbent leads a staff of professional archaeologists and
technicians to accomplish work objectives. Work involves use of
contemporary archaeological methods and theory ensuring the
comprehensive preservation of Cultural Places important to the
Yakama Nation. Incumbent must qualify as an Archaeologist under
Department of Interior Guidelines as referenced in 36 CFR, Part
800, in order to perform surveys of proposed logging units.
Incumbent will serve on the Inter-Disciplinary Team (IDT) and serve
as the custodian of the archaeological survey activity file for the
BOF. Incumbent will be available to BOF Fire Management to advise
fire suppression incident commanders of cultural resource
concerns.Examples of Work Performed:
- Uses contemporary archaeological methods and theory to ensure
the comprehensive protection of cultural places important to the
Yakama Nation.
- Applies skills and knowledge for the enhancement of a living
culture.
- Conducts archaeological surveys in the Administrative Forest of
proposed logging units or other proposed projects by program that
are part of the YN Department of Natural Resources (DNR).
- Monitors and evaluates timber sale operations for compliance
with contract terms for the protection of tribal cultural
properties and provides recommendations for Timber Sales Officers
to assist them in applying appropriate protection measures.
- Assesses proposed fire suppression tactics for potential
impacts on tribal cultural properties.
- Utilizes archival information for use in preparing cultural
resource management reports. The information may include old
photographs, manuscripts, oral history tapes, videotapes, and other
documents important to the Yakama Nation cultural heritage.
- Maintains archival and current project information security
consistent with policy established by the YN Cultural
Committee.
- Abide by Yakama Nation Rules and Regulations.Knowledge, Skills
and Abilities:
- Knowledge of federal and state laws as they relate to the
protection of cultural resources. Specific knowledge of the
National Historic Preservation Act.
- Knowledge of geomorphology and resource mapping and
distribution models using photoreconnaissance.
- Knowledge of lithic technology as it applies to stone tool
manufacture and a familiarity with the working key classification
of prehistoric stone tools of the Columbia Basin.
- Ability to become knowledge of the Treaty of 1855 and the case
law or common law developed since its ratification.
- Ability to become knowledge of tribal laws as they relate to
the protection of cultural resources.
- Ability to become knowledge of the historical relationship of
BIA BOF and the Yakama tribal government and organization
structure.
- Skill in site mapping and description.
- Skill in or ability to learn computers to process
archaeological reports, archive and secure proprietary and
confidential information.
- Ability to express ideas in the general public to advocate for
cultural resource protection.
- Ability to effectively communicate and exercise interpersonal
skills working with people from a wide variety of educational and
cultural backgrounds to accomplish the administration of the
supervised work unit as well as planning timber sales with work
units within the BOF and DNR.
- Ability to organize thoughts and write technical documents so
they may be easily understood by others not skilled in
archaeology.
- Ability to apply contemporary archaeological methods and
theories to the survey of lands included in proposed federal
actions in the YN Administrative Forest.
- Ability to work collaboratively with all Yakama Nation
archaeological and cultural staff in developing, writing and
implementing policies and practices for the management of cultural
resources.Minimum Requirements:
- Masters of Science Degree in Archaeology, Anthropology or
related field.
- Three years experience performing archaeological studies.
- Required to pass pre-employment drug test.
- Must be physically fit and ability to work under adverse
weather conditions. Must be able to pass the moderate pack test for
emergency response to wildfires.
- Must possess a valid Washington State Driver's License with the
ability to obtain a Yakama Nation Driving permit.
- Enrolled Yakama Preference, but all qualified applicants are
