Learn more: .The Role:The Maintenance Mechanic 2 performs asbestos abatement and skilled work in the operation, maintenance, repair, remodeling and construction of buildings, mechanical facilities, and equipment both individually and with other Facilities Maintenance staff as needed. Incumbents work independently and utilize a general knowledge of several related skill fields such as plumbing, electrical, carpentry, and painting. The duties, specific tasks or combinations of tasks are performed professionally and efficiently, incorporating both personal integrity and mutual respect. Job Duties


Perform asbestos abatement and general remodeling and construction. Work may include but not limited to:
- Remove asbestos from ceiling, walls, beams, boilers, and other structures following hazardous waste guidelines: assemble scaffolding and seal off work area using plastic sheeting and duct tape.
- Positions mobile decontamination unit or portable showers at entrance of work areas.
- Build connecting walkway between mobile unit or portable showers and work area using hand tools, lumber, fasteners, plastic sheeting, and duct tape.
- Position portable air evacuation and filtration system inside or outside work area.
- Spray chemical solution over asbestos covered surfaces using direct pump sprayers to soften and wet fibers.
- Remove asbestos from surfaces using hand tools.
- Shovel asbestos containing materials into plastic bags, spray with water, ensure all bags are sealed properly.
-Clean work areas using HEPA vacuum and wet rags.
-Dismantle scaffolding and temporary walkways using small hand tools and dispose of all contaminated materials.
- Take any asbestos waste bags to designated site and or hazardous waste landfill.
- Perform glove bags on asbestos containing material.
- Floor tile and mastic Asbestos-Containing Materials (ACM) removal.
- Remove Thermal system insulation (TSI) ACM under building crawl spaces and tunnels.
- Remove and demo all ACM building materials while adhering to Washington Administrative Code (WAC) regulations.
- Perform remodel work in housing facilities such as: hanging sheetrock, flooring, painting, general construction, hanging cabinets, finish work, countertop installation, tape mud sheetrock.
- Effectively communicate and maintain positive working relations with faculty, staff, students, and the campus community as well as Facilities Management Department (FMD) management team.
- Perform work in a manner that provides excellent service with nominal to no inconvenience or disruption for the client. Perform quality work meets or exceeds the expectation and satisfaction of the client.
- Perform work using Best Practices while maintaining compliance with applicable laws, policies, and procedures to provide a safe workplace.
- Improvement project work on university facilities.
- Perform work on electrical systems such as 110-volt electrical switch and receptacle replacement, electrical connection repair, light fixture repair replacement, hot water heater repair replacement, repair replacement of fractional horsepower motors.
- Perform preventive maintenance on all types of mechanical systems including changing belts and filters.
- Ensure all tools, and shop equipment are maintained and in good working order.
- Clean roofs, drain, gutters.
- Respond in emergency situations.
- Perform maintenance and repair on plumbing systems such as unplugging drains, replacing plumbing fixture and repair of flushometers.
- Attend departmental meetings, safety meetings and actively participate in training sessions.- Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications


Experience and/or education demonstrating a substantial working knowledge of a variety of skilled fields such as carpentry, plumbing, painting and/or electrical or any applicable field.Effective communication skills.Valid Washington State driver's license.Obtain a Washington State Asbestos Worker Certification within 6 months of hire and maintain throughout employment.Obtain a Washington State AHERA (Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act) Building Inspector certification within 6 months of hire and maintain throughout employment.Obtain a Washington State Supervisors Certification after 1,600 hours of documented asbestos work under supervision and maintain throughout employment.Ability to pass respirator physical and wear one for use in abatement and any other uses when necessary.Experience using Word, Excel, e-mail, and/or similar software applications to produce written correspondence, documentation, create simple reports, receive, and respond to e-mail inquiries, report time, etc.Ability to follow written and verbal instructions and communicate both orally and in writing in a clear and professional manner.Able to work independently and monitor progress against defined parameters.Demonstrated willingness and/or experience working with students and/or co-workers from a wide range of abilities, backgrounds, and experiences.Or applicable combination of education and/or experience which demonstrates the ability to perform the essential functions of the position.Preferred Qualifications

Pay, Benefits, & Work Schedule


Salary: This position is based on the range 47G of the Washington State Classification Listing, which has a minimum annual salary of $55,224 and maximum annual salary of $64,092. In accordance with RCW 49.58.110, the above salary reflects the full salary range for this position. Individual placement within the range is based on the candidate's current experience, education, skills, and abilities related to the position. Assignment Pay Premium: In addition to base salary, employees may be entitled to the following:
(approximately 10%) for certified asbestos sampling and glove and bag work that does not require full-body protective clothing and pressurized respirator.(approximately 20%) for certified asbestos/lead work that requires to wear and change into full body protective clothing and pressurized respirator.Schedule/Appointment: Monday - Friday, 8:00am-5:00pm (1 hour lunch) / May vary depending on needs of the department / May become swing shift / The project has an anticipated end date of September 30, 2025 / WFSE Bargaining Unit 1 / These project positions are currently funded through September 30, 2025. These project positions may be extended, may become permanent civil service or may end.Working Conditions: This position may work indoors and outdoors at times in hot/cold/noisy/dirty/wet/confined areas such as mechanical rooms, utility holes and excavations, and may need to physically access work areas with the equipment and tools necessary for completion of the job. This often requires standing/crawling/bending/walking/climbing while carrying/pulling/pushing/lifting associated with equipment or tools up to 50 pounds. Occasional overtime is required, and shift work may be required. May need to drive a service vehicle in congested areas. Utilize and wear appropriate personal protection devices such as respirators, ear protection, and eye and face protection and fall protection. Scheduled hours and days off may vary depending on the needs of the department. May be required to work weekends, evenings, and holidays. This position is subject to unplanned overtime including emergency call back situations. Occasional travel may be required. The incumbent will work outdoors, including working in inclement weather during daylight and dark hours. In addition, this position will work with and be exposed to machinery, tools, electrical equipment. Will work around all utilities during excavations, maintenance and installations and be exposed to insects that may be in the environment. Must maintain awareness of immediate vicinity in order to recognize, respond to and/or avoid potentially hazardous conditions/surroundings. Must possess dexterity of hands and fingers to operate tools, materials, and equipment necessary to perform functions of the job.
